Broadcast Hill
The Paskapoo slopes, on Calgary’s western ridge, house Broadcast Hill with CTV’s television station and transmission tower, and Canada Olympic Park, with its ski hills and jumps. The complete panorama of the tower and slopes were the view from my work-space and the inspiration for this series, which was created between November, 2023 and April, 2024.
‘Broadcast Hill’, the series, consists of 283 drawings, 14" x 5 1/4", mixed media, on Stonehenge paper. A simple paper template was constructed to represent the hill. At the beginning of the series, the template was placed in the lower third of the paper, with ample space left above for Calgary’s skies to entertain. The same template was used in all 283 drawings. It will become apparent, however, as the viewer travels through the series, that the template shape appears to shift, reposition itself, multiply, roll, momentarily recompose itself, and then go to pieces altogether.
In this series, the slopes are the conduit illustrating events experienced in real time. Each drawing is its own episode or part of a sub series contained within the larger body of the completed works. These variations of a scene, serve as a visual record of events. The drawing I most appreciate in particular is the documentation of ‘Jasper’ the Torbie (RIP June 2024) my loyal friend and companion. Her sleeping peacefully on top of the hill Jan. 2024, is the moment Love’s pencil came in and touched this series.
